EMR or booking system? Sorting 24 platforms
The most expensive mistake in this category is buying a beautiful booking platform and discovering, after migration, that it cannot chart a treatment. These products are marketed with nearly identical language. They are not nearly identical.
Scope note. This page is about software capability, not clinical or legal advice. The distinction that matters
Practically every platform here can take a booking, run a card and send a reminder text. The divide is what happens in the treatment room.
A clinical EMR records the procedure: structured or SOAP-style notes, injection maps, treatment-specific consent capture, before-and-after photography tied to the patient record, and usually e-prescribing. A booking and POS system records the transaction. It may offer intake forms and file attachments, which look adjacent to charting and are not the same thing.
If your practice performs injectables, energy-based treatments, or anything requiring a prescription, a booking-only platform means you will run a second system alongside it. That second system is a real line item, and it almost never appears in the comparison tables that put these products side by side.

How to use this
Work out which column you belong in before you shortlist, not after. Three questions settle it:
- Does a licensed provider perform a procedure that must be documented? If yes, you need the clinical column — or a booking platform plus a separate EMR, budgeted as two subscriptions.
- Does anyone prescribe? E-prescribing is a paid module almost everywhere it exists. Aesthetic Record charges $31–45 per prescriber depending on term; AestheticsPro bundles it only at the top tier. Price it separately.
- How many locations and how many providers? This decides more of your bill than the platform choice does. Per-location pricing punishes multi-site; per-user pricing punishes large teams. Run both through the calculator.
Where we would not trust a label
2 platforms market clinical capability in terms we could not verify from public documentation — Phorest, Zenoti. That is not an accusation; quote-only vendors reasonably keep detail behind a sales conversation. But we will not score a capability we have not been able to check, and neither should you. Ask for a charting demonstration with your own treatment types before signing.
